Noon Chai and a Story, also known as Noon Chai Kathaigal in Hindi, is a heartwarming bilingual picture book set in the remote village of Gurez in Kashmir, near the Line of Control between India and Pakistan. The story beautifully illustrates the power of community and the importance of books, especially in places where access to them is limited. When an Uncle From Far Away shows Amiya's class a storybook, he inspires them to build their own library. However, in Gurez, storybooks are scarce, with only the abundance of snow being readily available. Amiya then realizes that her Deidi (grandmother) holds a wealth of stories within her memory. Over steaming cups of traditional pink noon chai, Deidi begins to share her stories, which Amiya diligently writes down while her sister illustrates, leading to the creation of a book. The narrative subtly hints at the historical context of Partition and the ongoing conflict in the state of Kashmir.
